Photo: ©︎ Nacása and Partners Inc. FUTA Moriishi I designed MERCATO MERCATO!!, an Italian restaurant integrated into “BEAKER,” a shared living and working complex developed as part of Mitsui Fudosan’s Greater Nihonbashi initiative. The project renovates a former traditional ryotei and incorporates shared housing, shared offices and food and beverage programs within a single mixed-use framework. The restaurant adopts a spatial narrative inspired by open-air markets, where guests select fresh ingredients displayed as if in an authentic marketplace and place their orders accordingly. The site originally functioned as part of a parking area with a beam height of only two point one meters, making the mitigation of spatial compression a major design consideration. The upper portions of the walls and beams were finished in a darker tone while the lower sections were treated in lighter colors, directing the visual focus downward and alleviating the perceived weight of the low ceiling. Wine crates were repurposed, painted and used as shelving to introduce texture and a sense of stocked abundance. The wall finish overlays red paint onto existing white tiles to evoke a subtle check pattern and introduce visual rhythm. A former parking attendant room was transformed into a small private lounge furnished with a sofa, and a reinterpreted Last Supper graphic was incorporated to cultivate a sense of secrecy akin to a hidden retreat. Additional graphic elements were installed in the restroom areas to introduce moments of lightheartedness within the overall dining experience.
